THE JUNIOR LODGE
PUFF - den lille dragen

Puff den lille dragen bor i et vann
ved siden av de store hav
i et fjernt og fremmed land.
Puff den lille dragen lykkelig og fin,
et magisk dyr fra eventyr
i guttens fantasi.

i andre gutters drøm.

Puff - den lille........

HILSEN: May/June 2017 - Jr. Lodge News Teaching the Next Generation:

The Gyda Varden Jr. Lodge received $500 to help ‘Teach the Next Generation’ from the Sons of Norway Foundation Helping Hands to Children Grant. This grant will provide funds to help bring young Norwegians together to learn more about their heritage. They will learn about the country of Norway, what it means to be Norwegian, activities Norwegian youth participate in, music and dance of Norway and last but not least the food from Norway. We will be updating and purchasing supplies and materials to help teach the youth in these areas with the money we received.

Mary Ann Johnson and I are leading the Jr. Lodge with help from parents of the new Jr. Lodge members.
"We are so excited to have received this grant! A big thanks is due to our president, Sue Bjornstad, for helping us to put the grant together. With the help of this grant money, we are going to be able to bring fun and exciting projects and experiences to our Junior members that will help to inspire a love of Norway! We hope that our Junior members will be able to learn not only about their own heritages and histories from Norway, but also about all of the exciting experience and events that take place in Norway today."

HILSEN: March/April 2017 - Jr. Lodge News Teaching the Next Generation:
From: THE YOUTH DIRECTOR:

Jr. Lodge News Hei Alle Sammen!
The Gyda Varden Sons of Norway Jr. Lodge got underway this past month! After a few years of inactivity,
members Andriana Sethre (Jr. Lodge Director) and Mary Ann Johnson have joined together with an aim to restart
and revitalize the youth program.

Jr. Lodge members and friends were invited to a kick-off event during the Grand Forks Greenway Ski Day on February 4th.
The day was filled with cross country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding events, horse drawn wagon rides, and a chili feed.
It was a perfect day to enjoy very Norwegian outdoor activities!

The Jr. Lodge then met on February 11th for its first formal club meeting.
We (officially!) gained two new Heritage members, Taylor and Lauren Herman!
Together with Heritage members, Mia Narvaiz and Keiley Sethre, the girls began learning: parts for an upcoming play, “Tre Bukkene Bruse” (3 Billy Goats Gruff),

began learning some Norwegian words, and discussed upcoming events that the group hopes to do this year!

The group enjoyed homemade Norwegian waffles (vaffler) with all of the fixings; brunost (brown cheese), jordbærsyltetøy (strawberry jam), and pisket krem (whipped cream).

The Jr. Lodge meets again on March 11th from 9am-11am at the Gyda Varden Lodge. Practice will continue
for the “Tre Bukkene Bruse” (parts are still available for those who would like to take part!). We’ll also be learning
some more Norwegian vocabulary and songs, as well as have some Norwegian treats!

Heritage and Unge Venner members are encouraged to join us and to bring a friend!

Mange Vennlig Hilsen! - Andriana Sethre, Director

HERITAGE
MEMBERS

Children age 15 and younger may become Heritage members of Sons of Norway if at least one parent or grandparent is a Sons of Norway member.

Barn av regnbuen by Lillebjørn Nilsen english subtitle "Barn av regnbuen". (Children of the RainBow.)

In 1968 the Fram Junior Lodge was formed to kindle an interest in Norwegian heritage among the youth. This made the Grand Forks lodge a family-oriented organization. Junior lodge members have repeatedly performed in programs and folk dancing, and have carried out projects to enhance their culture and tradition.

The Junior Lodge gathers each month to learn about the culture of Norway. Folk dancing, singing, crafts, language, folklore and skits are some of the activities through which we celebrate our heritage. A Jr. Lodge Director can do what seemed to me impossible to do in a narrative, a TV show, or even by watching someone else dance & sing. It would be an excellent thing if at last, through the dramatization, handwork & only a small vocabulary with a rough feeling for simple rhythm the Jr. Lodge children should come to sufficient understanding and enthusiasm to turn skalds and compose songs in the Norse manner.

Why learn Norwegian?

Si meg så, hva vil du mere?

The dragon head on Leif's ship. The repertoire for the Unge Venner Members may include learning rosemaling, costumes, landscapes, houses, feast halls, and ships, or carving a ship's-head, or a copper shield, or a wrought door-nail. The Norsemen, with the crude courage and the strange adventures that make a person interesting, at the same time have the love of truth, the hardy endurance, the faithfulness to plighted word, that make them a child's fit companions.
